Okay, so you understand that it is important to workout.  Good.  Now, the next step is making sure you are eating something before you workout and after your workout so you can get the most out of that workout!

First, before I give suggestions of food to eat before you workout and after your workout I want to explain a little why it is important to make sure you fuel your body.

The pre-workout meal is pretty basic.  If you want to have  energy to give your very best effort during your workout then you need to fuel yourself first.  I recommend eating something 30 minutes before you hit the gym.  Just a little bit of food helps provide the energy you need to get the very most out of your workout.   I don’t care if you aren’t hungry, you need to eat something!

Pre-workout suggestions:

-Rice cake with peanut butter or almond butter (this is what I have every morning)

– Protein shake (this can just be water mixed with protein)

-Ezekiel bread with peanut butter or almond butter

-Banana with peanut butter or almond butter

When I say peanut butter or almond butter I recommend 1/2 a tablespoon..just a small amount to coat the carb..you don’t need a ton!

Your post workout meal is the most important meal of the day (besides breakfast). The goal should be to eat your post workout meal right after your workout or no later than 30-40 minutes after your workout.  If you want to read about why the post workout meal is so important read this article from, bodybuilding.com.  The main reason is, you need to feed your muscles. If you don’t feed your muscles then the muscles could become damaged and your body will lack gains from your workout.  If you are to going to spend the time at the gym then you should want to get the most out of EVERY. SINGLE. WORKOUT.

After your workout you should fuel your body with a carbohydrate and a protein.

Here are my recommendations for a post workout meal:

– 1/4 of a cup of oatmeal (just plain old quaker oats) mixed with a scoop of protein powder

– Smoothie – protein powder,  1/2 banana, and water (add some spinach too!)

– Ezekiel Bread with eggs

-Protein Bar (I recommend Pure Protein Bars or Quest Bars)

I can’t express enough how important these two meals are.  If you are going to take the time to be in the gym, then you need to make sure you are getting the most out of your workouts.  Don’t let those workouts go to waste..fuel your body!!!!!!!
